Know your options

Taking responsibility for your own body, understanding what happens before, during and after menopause and knowing what your options are to change, manage or improve things is an important part of self-love and self-care. But with so many sources available today, where do you start?

You will have your own questions, circumstances, fears and experiences that you will want guidance and direction on. So I encourage you to do your research. I also encourage you to consult your GP and talk about menopause in the context of you … they deal with patients’ struggles and questions every day and are likely to be able to help you or point you in the direction of the person or organisation who can.

In doing my own research, I have found many useful and interesting resources both on and offline, and for such a taboo subject it’s great to know that the information is there when you are ready to learn.

Here’s just a few of the people, websites, books and/or organisations that I found most helpful:

Until you believe you have options, you’ll continue to feel stuck.
SEAN STEPHENSON

Dr Louise Newson

GP and Menopause Specialist, Dr. Louise Newson, is passionate about improving education about the perimenopause and menopause and improving awareness of safe prescribing of HRT to healthcare professionals. In 2019, Dr Newson set up a not-for-profit company, Newson Health Research and Education, to further research into the menopause.

I first came across Dr Newson at an event hosted by skincare expert and wellbeing advocate, Liz Earle, where a group of fifty midlife women were learning about the menopause and HRT. I arrived at this presentation carrying the fairly uninformed view point of ‘HRT is not for me’ and left two hours later thinking ‘Why hadn’t I started HRT years before!?’

Educating yourself on the options available to you and seeking expert guidance to help in making your decisions over your treatment plan is so important. It’s your body, your perimenopause and your choice.

Dr Louise Newson offers a large library of FREE information about all things peri- and menopause on her website, podcast, social media platforms and via the Balance menopause app.

In 2023, she released her latest book, “The Definitive Guide to the Perimenopause and Menopause” which not only gives you the facts about the menopause journey, including the latest research, but also empowers you to ask the right questions and seek the right solutions as you navigate this vital stage of life.

Demystifying the big questions, such as why the menopause is different in today’s world, how to manage at work and when to consider HRT, her book will inform you and empower you to become the expert of your own menopause.

Maryon Stewart BEM

Maryon Stewart BEM, with more than 29 years of experience of study and expertise, is known as the pioneer of the natural menopause movement. She, and her expert team, help women understand and manage their menopause symptoms without hormones.

During my search for solutions to my own menopause symptoms, I had the pleasure of working directly with Maryon and her team, wearing my marketing consultant’s hat, on the launch of The Natural Menopause Plan and the six-week online group programme. I learned much about how to manage the symptoms of menopause with diet, supplements, exercise and lifestyle choices, whilst witnessing the positive impacts of this approach for many of the women on the programme.

For those who choose not to take hormones, or are unable to as a result of their medical history, the natural menopause programme offers excellent guidance on how to take control of your symptoms and enjoy this next stage of your life.

Maryon’s latest book, ‘Manage your Menopause Naturally’ takes you through a six-week guide to calming hot flashes and night sweats, getting your sex drive back, sharpening memory and reclaiming wellbeing.’
