Know your options
Taking responsibility for your own body, understanding what happens before, during and after menopause and knowing what your options are to change, manage or improve things is an important part of self-love and self-care. But with so many sources available today, where do you start?
You will have your own questions, circumstances, fears and experiences that you will want guidance and direction on. So I encourage you to do your research. I also encourage you to consult your GP and talk about menopause in the context of you … they deal with patients’ struggles and questions every day and are likely to be able to help you or point you in the direction of the person or organisation who can.
In doing my own research, I have found many useful and interesting resources both on and offline, and for such a taboo subject it’s great to know that the information is there when you are ready to learn.
Here’s just a few of the people, websites, books and/or organisations that I found most helpful:
Dr Louise Newson
GP and Menopause Specialist, Dr. Louise Newson, is passionate about improving education about the perimenopause and menopause and improving awareness of safe prescribing of HRT to healthcare professionals. In 2019, Dr Newson set up a not-for-profit company, Newson Health Research and Education, to further research into the menopause.
I first came across Dr Newson at an event hosted by skincare expert and wellbeing advocate, Liz Earle, where a group of fifty midlife women were learning about the menopause and HRT. I arrived at this presentation carrying the fairly uninformed view point of ‘HRT is not for me’ and left two hours later thinking ‘Why hadn’t I started HRT years before!?’
Educating yourself on the options available to you and seeking expert guidance to help in making your decisions over your treatment plan is so important. It’s your body, your perimenopause and your choice.
Dr Louise Newson offers a large library of FREE information about all things peri- and menopause on her website, podcast, social media platforms and via the Balance menopause app.
In 2023, she released her latest book, “The Definitive Guide to the Perimenopause and Menopause” which not only gives you the facts about the menopause journey, including the latest research, but also empowers you to ask the right questions and seek the right solutions as you navigate this vital stage of life.
Dr Annice Mukherjee
Dr Annice Mukherjee is a top hormone consultant with almost 30 years of experience helping women achieve hormone balance and renewed vitality before, during and after the menopause. She also went through the menopause herself at just 41 following a breast cancer diagnosis. In her book, “The Complete Guide to the Menopause” she combines both her medical expertise and her own personal experience to create a powerful holistic toolkit which every woman can start using straight away.
Demystifying the big questions, such as why the menopause is different in today’s world, how to manage at work and when to consider HRT, her book will inform you and empower you to become the expert of your own menopause.
Davina McCall with Dr Naomi Potter
Whilst not a menopause expert in her own right, television presenter Davina McCall has done much to raise the awareness of menopause, it’s challenges and the solutions available to women. Davina is a passionate advocate and champion for menopause care and has made two programmes on the subject: ‘Sex, Myths and the Menopause’ and ‘Sex, Mind and the Menopause.’
Davina also runs #MenopauseMonday on her Instagram account @davinamccall, which helps inform all women of their options during the menopause and offers support.
Her book, ‘Menopausing – The Positive Roadmap to your second spring’ is written in conjunction with Dr Naomi Potter, a British Menopause Society accredited specialist. Dr Potter is the founder and clinical lead of Menopause Care, which provides online and face-to-face consultations to women from all over the UK.
Jill Shaw Ruddock
Jill Shaw Ruddock, CBE is author of The Second Half of Your Life, Founder and Chairman, The Second Half Foundation and Chairman and Chief Executive, The Second Half Centre.
Her book The Second Half of Your Life is written especially for women over 50, based on the science of hormones, using the changes around menopause as the trigger to get to the best years of your life. The book has been heralded as “one of the most important women’s books for a decade”, “ground-breaking”, “inspirational” and “the manual for women in the second half of their life.”
Marcelle Pick, NP, is passionate about transforming the way women experience healthcare through an integrative approach. She co-founded the world renowned Women to Women Clinic in 1983 with the vision to not only treat illness, but also help support her patients in pro-actively making healthier choices to prevent disease. She has successfully treated thousands of individuals through her unique approach to wellness.
In her best-selling book, Is It Me or My Hormones?: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly about PMS, Perimenopause, and All the Crazy Things That Occur with Hormone Imbalance, Marcelle delves into the often misunderstood world of female hormonal imbalance.
Sharing her personal struggles and her experiences with patients, Marcelle helps you understand how the right diet, exercise, supplements, herbs, and psychological support, occasionally complemented with bioidentical hormones, can free you from hormone disruption.
Perimenopause and menopause are also subjects she writes about on a regular basis here on her blog:
Christiane Northrup, M.D., is a visionary pioneer and a leading authority in the field of women’s health and wellness, which includes the unity of mind, body, emotions, and spirit. Internationally known for her empowering approach to women’s health and wellness, Dr. Northrup teaches women how to thrive at every stage of life.
Her New York Times best-selling book, The Wisdom of Menopause: The Complete Guide to Physical and Emotional Health During The Change, has been embraced by women everywhere, including Oprah Winfrey, who sought Dr. Northrup’s wisdom when she turned 50 and faced “The Big M.” In this New York Times bestseller, Dr. Northrup once again challenged convention with inspiring insights—the “change” is not a collection of symptoms to be fixed, but a mind/body revolution, which brings tremendous opportunity for happiness.
Maryon Stewart BEM
Maryon Stewart BEM, with more than 29 years of experience of study and expertise, is known as the pioneer of the natural menopause movement. She, and her expert team, help women understand and manage their menopause symptoms without hormones.
During my search for solutions to my own menopause symptoms, I had the pleasure of working directly with Maryon and her team, wearing my marketing consultant’s hat, on the launch of The Natural Menopause Plan and the six-week online group programme. I learned much about how to manage the symptoms of menopause with diet, supplements, exercise and lifestyle choices, whilst witnessing the positive impacts of this approach for many of the women on the programme.
For those who choose not to take hormones, or are unable to as a result of their medical history, the natural menopause programme offers excellent guidance on how to take control of your symptoms and enjoy this next stage of your life.
Maryon’s latest book, ‘Manage your Menopause Naturally’ takes you through a six-week guide to calming hot flashes and night sweats, getting your sex drive back, sharpening memory and reclaiming wellbeing.’
